What Should a Technology Website Look Like?
Web design for technology companies can be both easy and challenging. It can be easy because you may have a multitude of highly intelligent, highly technical people within your staff who can help contribute to the design or development process. But it can also be challenging because you have to find a way to present an enormous amount of information in one small space.
Growing your technology company through your website doesn't have to be difficult. But there are some web design best practices you should follow to ensure that you are attracting the most visitors possible to your site, and also converting them into interested leads.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind for the design of your technology company's website.
Responsive Design is No Longer Optional
Do you know how many people visit your website from their smartphones or tablets? Did you know that you could be losing potential leads because your website isn't mobile-friendly?
Mobile-friendliness is no longer an option—it's a requirement. If your website isn't built using responsive design, and visitors have to scroll or zoom just to view the content on one page, it's entirely possible that your potential leads are getting frustrated and leaving your site for a competitor's.
Responsive design refers to the design method that automatically scales up and down your content depending on the screen size of the device used to view it. So for example, on a desktop, you may see the full menu of a website at the top. But on a mobile device, a site using responsive design may only display a menu icon that you can tap to open.
If you aren't using responsive design, you should invest in this as quickly as possible. This will prevent the increasing number of visitors looking up information on their mobile devices from going to other websites.
The Fewer Choices, The Better
How big is your menu or website navigation? Does it have a lot of options, or just a few? Although your website may be expansive, it's better to give visitors just a few options than a lot.
Website visitors—especially those on mobile devices—don't want to spend a lot of time digging through links and menus to find what they are looking for. Where possible, you should condense your menu to include only the most important options. For a technology company, this could include a history of your business, a list of products or services, contact information, and so on.
If you have additional pages, you can add them as items in a sub-menu, or as pages linked from a central, topical landing page, to push visitors to them. However, you should again aim to keep your navigation as clutter-free as you can, so that visitors can find the information they need without spending too long looking for it.
Use Authentic Media Wherever Possible
Does your website use free or inexpensive stock photos to add visual interest? Do you have graphics on your homepage that take up a lot of space and look nice, but don't really say anything about your company? If so, it's time to make a change.
Website visitors and potential leads seek out authenticity when they browse online. Because of this, you should aim to use authentic, genuine media that truly reflects who your company is, what you do, and how you can help new visitors. This might include:
- Photos of your offices or facilities
- Photos or videos of your product
- Photos or videos of your team
- Diagrams or instruction manuals of your products, especially if they are highly technical
The more authentic your photos and other content is, the more likely it is that a visitor will understand who you really are. This kind of understanding can lead to increased trust, which makes potential leads more likely to get in touch with you.
